…In the autumn of 1851, he also swept through Scotland to remove the threat of counter-revolution, but when the First Anglo-Dutch War broke out following the passage of the Navigation Acts, he dissolved the Long Parliament (Rump Parliament) by force in 1853, against the backdrop of growing dissatisfaction with the military. Later, when the Nominated Parliament, made up only of recommended members, showed enthusiasm for social reform, he forced it to dissolve voluntarily, and at the end of the same year, he became Lord Protector for life, in accordance with the constitution (Bill of Government) prepared by military leaders.
