A city in western Nigeria, located about 50 km north of Ibadan. From the mid-1830s it was the center of the Oyo Empire. The former Oyo Empire was the most important and prestigious kingdom among the early Yoruba territories, but its capital, Old Oyo (about 130 km north-northeast), was destroyed by the Fulani in the mid-1930s, and the empire itself collapsed in 1939. Oyo later allied with Ibadan during the Yoruba conflicts in the mid-19th century, and when the army of Dahomey (now Benin) invaded in 1887, Oyo allied with Lagos to resist the French, contributing to the establishment of the Yoruba Kingdom as a British protectorate. The main agricultural products are tobacco, cotton, yams, cassava, and corn, and cotton weaving, as well as dyeing, leatherwork, and woodcarving are also produced. Population: 226,300 (1991 estimate). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
