The capital of Azuay province in southern Ecuador. Its official name is Santa Ana de Cuenca. It is located in a basin in the Andes (Cuenca in Spanish) at an altitude of about 2600m. It was built by the Spaniards in 1557 on the site of the castle of Huayna Capac, the 11th Emperor of the Inca Empire. It is the third largest city in Ecuador after Guayaquil and Quito, and is the commercial center of southern Ecuador, trading agricultural products, livestock, leather, marble, etc. It is also home to industries such as textiles, lace, leather products, jewelry, and food, and is known as a producer of Panama hats and high-quality drinking water. The Indian market held every Thursday is an important economic activity for the city and attracts many tourists. The old town, which retains the appearance of the Spanish colonial era with its cobblestone streets and old marble houses, also preserves excellent architecture, including a monastery built in 1599, and was registered as a cultural heritage of the World Heritage Sites in 1999. It is home to the University of Azuay (University of Cuenca, 1868) and the Catholic University of Cuenca (1970). It is connected to the Pan-American Highway and a railway line that branches off from the main railway line that connects Quito and Guayaquil. The population is 194,981 (1990).

Cuenca is the capital of the province of Cuenca in the Autonomous Community of Castile-La Mancha in central Spain. It is located about 140 km east-southeast of Madrid, on the western edge of the Cuenca Mountains, on the banks of the Júcar River. It originated as the ancient Roman town of Conca, and was occupied by the Moors. In 1177, it came under the rule of Alfonso VIII of Castile. In the 16th century, it became famous for its silver and woolen textiles. It is a trading center for timber cut from the nearby mountains, and produces furniture, paper, leather, etc. The railway line between Madrid and Valencia runs through it. The townscape, with its unique scenery that makes use of natural fortifications, was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1996. There are many historical buildings, including the famous 13th century cathedral in the Renaissance-Gothic style. Population: 42,615 (1991 estimate).
