…It is well known that Everest, which was recognized as the highest mountain in the world in 1852, was named after G. Everest, who served as the Surveyor General from 1830 to 1843. In the middle of the 19th century, more academic expeditions were carried out, mainly by botanist Joseph Dalton Hooker, who explored Sikkim (1848-50), followed by the German brothers Schlaginthwaite, who explored the western Himalayas and Karakoram widely (1854-57), climbing Abi Gamin (7,355 m) in Garhwal to 6,784 m. The first person to attempt Himalayan mountaineering was the British WW Graham, who, accompanied by an Alpine guide, attempted to climb mountains in Sikkim, Garhwal, and other places in 1883, claiming to have climbed present-day Changabang (6,864 m), but this has been denied by Himalayan researchers. …
