A village in Shimajiri District, Okinawa Prefecture, at the southeastern tip of Okinawa Island (main island). Population 10,006 (1995). In the east, a plateau of Ryukyu limestone gently slopes toward the sea, while in the west, rolling hills develop, with Oujima Island on the sea. The central settlement is Fusato, and National Route 133 leads to Naha City. The industry is sugarcane cultivation, but in recent years vegetable and flower cultivation, and dairy cattle farming have become popular. On Oujima, coastal fishing is practiced. There are many ruins and sacred sites from the Ryukyu Dynasty, and together with Chinen Village to the east, it is called the "Land of the Gods," and is a pilgrimage route called the "Agariumai." 沖縄県島尻郡,沖縄島(本島)南東端の村。人口1万0006(1995)。東部では琉球石灰岩の台地が海へ向かって緩傾斜し,西部では起伏に富む丘陵が発達,海上に奥武(おう)島がある。中心集落は富里(ふさと)で,国道133号線が那覇市へ通じる。産業はサトウキビ作のほか,近年は野菜,花卉栽培,乳用牛の畜産が盛んになってきた。奥武島では沿岸漁業を営む。琉球王朝時代からの遺跡や聖地が多く,東の知念村とともに〈神の国〉とよばれ,〈東御回り(アガリウマーイ)〉という巡礼路になっている。
