Yamakunigawa River

A river that flows through the northwestern part of Oita Prefecture. It originates from Mt. Hiko, erodes the wide lava plateau to form the scenic Yabakei, and when it reaches the Nakatsu Plain, it forms the border between Fukuoka and Oita prefectures, and flows into the Suo-Nada Sea. It is a first-class river that is 56 kilometers long and has a drainage area of ​​540 square kilometers. Forestry is thriving in the upper and middle reaches of the river. It irrigates about 3,000 hectares of rice paddies. The Yabakei Dam, which was completed in 1985 (Showa 60) for the purposes of flood control and for industrial and water supply use, was completed on the Yamautsuri River (a tributary) in Kakizaka, Yabakei Town, Nakatsu City. National Route 212 runs along the main river.

大分県北西部を流れる川。英彦(ひこ)山に源を発し、広い溶岩台地を侵食して名勝耶馬渓(やばけい)を形成し、中津平野に出ると、福岡・大分県境をなして、周防灘(すおうなだ)に注ぐ一級河川。延長56キロメートル、流域面積540平方キロメートル。上・中流域には林業が盛ん。約3000ヘクタールの水田を灌漑(かんがい)している。洪水調節、工業・上水道用水を目的とする耶馬渓ダムが、中津(なかつ)市耶馬渓町(やばけいまち)柿坂(かきざか)の山移(やまうつり)川（支流）に1985年（昭和60）完成。本流に沿って国道212号が走る。
