A river that flows through the northwestern part of Oita Prefecture. It originates from Mt. Hiko, erodes the wide lava plateau to form the scenic Yabakei, and when it reaches the Nakatsu Plain, it forms the border between Fukuoka and Oita prefectures, and flows into the Suo-Nada Sea. It is a first-class river that is 56 kilometers long and has a drainage area of 540 square kilometers. Forestry is thriving in the upper and middle reaches of the river. It irrigates about 3,000 hectares of rice paddies. The Yabakei Dam, which was completed in 1985 (Showa 60) for the purposes of flood control and for industrial and water supply use, was completed on the Yamautsuri River (a tributary) in Kakizaka, Yabakei Town, Nakatsu City. National Route 212 runs along the main river.
