1833‐1904 Yugoslav poet and children's writer. His real name was Jovan Jovanović. He was born in Novi Sad. He studied law and medicine in Pest, Prague, and Vienna. While earning a living as a doctor, he moved around mainly in the Vojvodina region, published various magazines, and worked to awaken and liberate the people. One of these magazines, Zmaj (the Dragon) (1864-71), became his nickname. He wrote a collection of poems about family happiness in The Djuric Family (1864), a shining example in the history of Serbian poetry, and in his later years he wrote a large number of children's poems.
