Tamagushi

It is also written as tamagushi. It is also called Futo Tamagushi or Yaso Tamagushi as a beautiful name. It is a branch of a sakaki tree with a paper shide (four-handed) and hemp (red and white silk kinushide for the imperial family). In contrast to the incense burnt in front of the Buddha in Buddhist ceremonies, this is offered when worshipping at a shrine or to ancestors (tamagushi offering), and is a characteristic of Shinto ceremonies. In areas where sakaki trees do not exist, branches of cypress or oak are used. It is also written as ○○ futo tamagushi on a wooden or paper tag, and is sometimes given by shrines like a divine talisman or amulet. There are various theories about the meaning of tamagushi, such as a skewer with a ball attached, a tamukegushi, or a tamagushi, and there is also a theory that the ball is a beautiful name. The proper way to offer tamagushi is to hold the branch with the base facing the altar, then bow twice, clap twice, and bow once more.

玉籤とも書く。美称して太(ふと)玉串、八十(やそ)玉串などともいう。榊(さかき)の枝に紙の垂(しで)（四手）および麻（皇族のときは紅白の絹垂(きぬしで)）をつけたもの。仏教儀礼における仏前での焼香(しょうこう)に対して、これは神前や祖霊に参拝するときに奉る（玉串奉奠(ほうてん)）もので、神道(しんとう)儀礼の一特色である。なお、榊のない地方では、檜(ひ)や櫟(いちい)の枝などが用いられる。また、木札もしくは紙札に、神霊の移るものとして○○太玉串と書き、神符や守札のごとく、神社から授与されることもある。玉串の語義は、玉を取り付けた串、手向串(たむけぐし)、霊串(たまぐし)などの説があり、玉は美称とする説もある。玉串を奉奠する作法は、小枝のもとのほうを神前に向けて奉り、二礼・二拍手・一礼をする。
