...By the end of the Edo period, there were approximately 2,000 Noh books published, of which about 80% were Kanze-style books. With a few exceptions, the scores in these books all omitted detailed notations, making it necessary to supplement them with books in the teacher's collection. However, in 1908, Maruoka Katsura published the Kanze-ryu Revised Noh Book, which completely eliminated the previous defects, and there was a trend toward books that could be sung immediately after looking at them. The notation was also improved, and notes, explanations, musical styles, costumes, and forms were added. Among the current Noh books, the Kanze-ryu Taiseiban (No. 205), which aimed to unify the school, the Hosho-ryu Reference Noh Book (No. 180), which printed the jibyōshi (basic rhythms), and the Kita-ryu New Complete Noh Book (No. 170), which has been improved many times, are excellent.... *Some of the terminology used in the "Kanze-ryu Revised Noh Book" is listed below.
