Andalusite - Andalusite (English spelling)

This mineral occurs in the form of columnar crystals that are close to square columns, as well as in aggregates or chunks of columnar or fibrous crystals. It is often found in contact metamorphic rocks of pelitic origin. It also occurs in aluminum-rich gneiss and crystalline schist. It is also found in granite pegmatites, pneumatolytic deposits, and hydrothermally alternating clay deposits. It often decomposes to produce muscovite. A variety called aeronite. Andalusite is heteromorphic with sillimanite and kyanite, and as a metamorphic mineral, it is stable in low temperature and pressure regions. Its English name comes from Andalusia in Spain, where it is found, and its Japanese name comes from its appearance.

正方柱に近い柱状結晶をなすほか、柱状ないし繊維状結晶の集合体あるいは塊状で産する鉱物。泥質岩起源の接触変成岩によくみられる。またアルミニウムに富む片麻(へんま)岩や結晶片岩中にも産する。そのほか、花崗(かこう)岩ペグマタイト中、気成鉱床中、熱水交代型の粘土鉱床中にみられる。分解して白雲母(しろうんも)を生じることがよくある。変種に空晶石がある。紅柱石は珪線(けいせん)石、藍晶(らんしょう)石と同質異像をなし、変成鉱物としては、低温低圧領域で安定である。英名は産地であるスペインのアンダルシアAndalusiaにちなんで命名され、和名は外観によるものである。
