This refers to books on world geography from the Edo period. In ancient Japan, the three countries of Honcho, Tang, and Tenjiku were generally considered to be the entire world, but with the arrival of Europeans at the end of the Warring States period, people learned of the existence of a vast world, global theories, and world maps. However, no world geography books exist from before the country was closed to the outside world. For a long time since the early Edo period, the foundations of world geography for Japanese people have been the Kunyu Bankokuzenzu (Map of the World) and its topographical descriptions by the Christian Matteo Ricci (Rimado), who lived in China at the end of the Ming and beginning of the Qing dynasties, Giulio Aleni's (Gaiji Yuryaku) Shokuho Gaiki, and Verbiest's (Nan Huairen) Kunyu Gaiki.
