This artificial lake is located in the Sayama Hills in the northern part of Higashiyamato City, Tokyo. Its official name is Murayama Reservoir, and it is divided into a lower reservoir on the east side and an upper reservoir on the west side by a 318-meter-long dam in the middle. It was completed between 1924 and 1927 (Taisho 13 and Showa 2). It has a circumference of about 17 kilometers and a total storage capacity of about 14.82 million cubic meters. Together with Lake Sayama (Yamaguchi Reservoir, Tokorozawa City, Saitama Prefecture) to the northwest, it is a water source for the Tokyo Metropolitan water supply. The Kitagawa River, which flowed through the hills, was dammed to create a reservoir that takes in water from the Tama River at Hamura Weir. The surrounding area is gently undulating and has mixed forests, and has been designated as Sayama Nature Park as a great place for family walks. The Seibu Railway Tamako Line and Seibuen Line run through the area. The northern part of the area belongs to Tokorozawa City, Saitama Prefecture, and the Seibu Dome (baseball stadium) and Seibuen Amusement Park are located near Seibu-Kyōjōmae Station, the terminus of the Seibu Railway Sayama Line.
