Iwamatsu

Japanese: 岩松 - いわまつ
Iwamatsu
A settlement of Uwajima City located in the southwest of Ehime Prefecture, deep in a bay overlooking the Uwa Sea (on the south bank of the mouth of the Iwamatsu River). Formerly known as the town of Tsushima, it was merged with five neighboring villages in 1955, and in 2005, one city and three towns were merged to form Uwajima City. Since the Edo period, the Konishi clan, known as wealthy merchants, lived here, and it was a distribution center for Tsushima-go's products. The white-walled, storehouse-style house of the Konishi family still remains. The wharf where the famous Sasaya Sengoku-bune boats arrived and departed was originally located in the center of town, but repeated floods of the Iwamatsu River have expanded the delta, and it is now located away from the center. It is also known as the setting for Shishi Bunroku's novel Tenyawan-ya.
