The most representative membrano of North India. To be precise, it is called the tabla-baya because it consists of two instruments, a tabla and a baya. The tabla, played with the right hand, has a hollowed-out wooden body, while the baya, played with the left hand, has a clay or copper body. Both have leather stretched over the surface and a tightening cord for tuning. The two drums are tuned in octaves, and the surface of the drums is covered with small circular smears of a paste mixed with iron powder to give a change in tone to the rhythm. It is always used as a rhythm instrument in vocal and instrumental performances, and very sophisticated rhythms are played with the palm and five fingers.
