After returning to Russia in 1817, he reported the situation in Germany to the Russian government as the Tsar's private correspondent, but in his magazine, the Literary Weekly, he ridiculed the liberal and patriotic ideas of the Burschenschaft, and was assassinated by the fanatical student Karl Ludwig Sand (1795-1820), who believed him to be a Russian spy and an enemy of the Burschenschaft.
