…In the 20th century, it has survived as merely one of the few exhibitions lacking in individuality. The works exhibited at the Salon have been listed in a catalog since 1675, but critics also sold their own critiques as a kind of guide or published them in newspapers and magazines during the exhibition, which led to the formation of the genre known as the “salon critique.” This ranges from explanations and enlightenment for the audience to aesthetic debates, and some of the more famous ones are those by Friedrich Melchior von Grimm, D. Diderot, Gustave Planche, T. Thoret, C. Baudelaire, T. Gautier, and the Goncourt brothers (art criticism). …
