A human skull has been excavated from the Tayak culture layer in the Fontéchevade cave in France. Interpretations of this bone are largely divided between those who believe it to be Neanderthal bones and those who believe it to be pre-Sapiens.

...This theory states that modern humans descended from a different lineage from Neanderthals. Since PM Boule (1913), many anthropologists have proposed various phylogenetic trees, but it was the French HV Vallois (1954) who compiled them. The term pre-sapiens was first used by the German G. Heberer (1950), and representative human fossils are three braincases discovered in the lower layer of a cave ruin in Fontéchevade, Charente, France. The geological age of the deposit in which the skulls were found is estimated to be the Liss/Würm Interglacial Period, but since it is accompanied by stone tools from the Tayak and Clacton cultures, it is older than pre-Neanderthals. ...
