The town is famous for its population because Abner Doubleday is said to have invented baseball here in 1839, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum (established in 1939) was established in the town for the centennial. This town, located on the south shore of the glacial lake Otsego Lake, is where the writer J.F. Cooper spent his childhood, and the town is named after his father, William Cooper, who was also the town's founder.
