Tilman (Dill, Til) Riemenschneider

German sculptor. Born in Heiligenstadt (Eichsfeld) and died in Würzburg. He is believed to have settled there before 1479. He was mayor of Würzburg from 1520 to 1521, but was tortured and imprisoned for siding with the peasants in the Peasants' War of 1525, losing his reputation and fortune. He is believed to have first trained in his hometown of central Germany (Erfurt?), but was later influenced by the Upper Rhine and Flanders. His woodcarvings are characterized by the use of light and shadow that emphasizes the sense of movement, as seen in the Altar of the Holy Blood (Jacob's Church, Rothenburg on the Tauber River) and the Maria Altar (Hergotz Church, Kroglingen). In stone sculpture, he ushered in a new era through the pursuit of individual expression and ideal beauty with works such as "Adam and Eve" (Würzburg), "Tombstone of Henry II and his wife" (Bamberg), and "Tombstone of Lorenz von Bibra" (Würzburg).

ドイツの彫刻家。ハイリゲンシュタット（アイヒスフェルト）に生まれ、ウュルツブルクで没した。この地に彼は1479年以前に定住していたものと推定される。1520～21年ウュルツブルク市長の職にあったが、25年農民戦争で農民の側に加担したため、拷問と重禁錮刑に処せられ名誉と財産を失った。最初の修行は故郷の中部ドイツ（エルフルト？）で行われたと推定されるが、のち上部ライン地方およびフランドルの影響を受けている。木彫では『聖なる血の祭壇』（タウバー河畔ローテンブルク、ヤコブ教会）や『マリア祭壇』（クレーグリンゲンのヘルゴッツ教会）にみられる運動感を強調した光と影の取扱いが特徴的である。石彫では『アダムとイブ』（ウュルツブルク）、『ハインリヒ2世夫妻の墓碑』（バンベルク）、『ロレンツ・フォン・ビブラの墓碑』（ウュルツブルク）など個性表現と理想美の追究により新時代を開いた。
