Tatehamodoki (English spelling) peacock pansy

A butterfly belonging to the order Lepidoptera, family Nymphalidae. It is commonly seen in the Nansei Islands south of Tanegashima and Yakushima, and in Kyushu, it is distributed up to the Miyazaki Plain on the east coast and up to the Satsuma Peninsula on the west coast. It is rarely found in the prefectures of Kumamoto, Nagasaki, and Oita, Shikoku, and Honshu, and is a vagrant butterfly from the south. Outside of Japan, it is widely distributed in Southeast Asia, from southern China to India in the west, and Borneo and Celebes in the east. Wing span is about 50 mm. There are significant seasonal variations in wing shape and markings, and the autumn type has angular wings and a dead leaf-like pattern on the underside of the wings. In southern Kyushu, the first eclosion, which emerges from eggs laid by overwintering mother butterflies, occurs from mid- to late May, and then continues to evolve several times from late autumn to December. The larvae's main food plants are the Verbenaceae family's Styewort, the Acanthaceae family's Styewort, and the Scrophulariaceae family's Styewort.
