An evergreen tall tree of the pine family, it grows in mountainous areas from central north to west of Honshu. The needles grow densely on the branches, and the young branches are reddish brown with blunt tips. It can reach a height of 30 m. The bark is reddish brown and peels off in small scales. The flowers are dioecious and have no perianth. The cones turn yellowish green when ripe. The seed scales are obovate-lanceolate. The wood is used in many ways as a substitute for cypress, especially for pulp. This species is considered to be a variety of P. jezoensis , but is sometimes treated as the same species. The two are distinguished by their place of origin, the branches of P. jezoensis are not reddish, and the seed scales are obovate.
