Year of death: 1615.6.4 (Genna 1.5.8) Year of birth: Unknown A military commander in the Azuchi-Momoyama period, vassal of the Toyotomi clan. Commonly known as Shuri-no-jo. Son of Okurakyo-no-tsubone, who was Hideyoshi's concubine Yodo-dono's wet nurse (Hideyori's birth mother) and later became a maid. Served as Hideyoshi's horseman, and shared in the construction of Fushimi Castle in 1594. At the time, he was awarded 10,000 koku and was appointed as a chamberlain of the fifth rank. After Hideyoshi's death, he served Hideyori closely and became the captain of the second guard, but in September 1599, he was arrested along with Asano Nagamasa and Hijikata Yukihisa on suspicion of attempting to assassinate Tokugawa Ieyasu, and Harunaga was exiled to Yuki in Shimotsuke (Tochigi Prefecture). However, he was pardoned shortly after Ishida Mitsunari and others raised an army the following year, and fought bravely on the eastern side in the Battle of Sekigahara. He later served the Toyotomi clan again, assisting Hideyori, and became a central figure after Katagiri Katsumoto was held responsible for the Hokoji Temple Bell Inscription Incident and fled Osaka in October of the same year. During the Winter Siege of Osaka that took place at the end of the same year, he worked hard with Oda Urakusai to negotiate a ceasefire. During the Summer Siege of Osaka the following year, 1615, he helped Ieyasu's granddaughter Senhime, who had become Hideyori's wife, escape and attempted to spare the lives of Hideyori and Yodo-dono by committing seppuku himself, but this was not accepted, so on May 8th, he committed suicide in Yamazato Castle along with Hideyori and Yodo-dono. His age at death is unknown, but if we take the theory that he was the same age as Yodo-dono, he would have been 49 years old. There is also a theory that he had an affair with Yodo-dono, and there is a document in the "Hagi-han Bakueroku" that states that Harunaga was entrusted to Ukita Hideie for an affair, but this is not true. Furthermore, the Meiryo Hongan states that both Tsurumatsu (Hideyoshi's first son) and Hideyori were illegitimate children of Yodo-dono and Harunaga, but this is also hard to believe.
