A city in the southeastern part of Gunma Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It lies between the Tone River and the Watarase River, and lakes and marshes are dotted in the low marshes. Tatebayashi Castle was built in the central city in the mid-16th century, and it developed as a castle town with the Sakakibara, Tokugawa, and Matsudaira clans residing there. It is the junction of the Tobu Railway's Isesaki, Sano, and Koizumi lines, and is the center of the local economy. It was known for its Tatebayashi tsumugi silk, but with the opening of the Tohoku Expressway in 1972, industrial parks were developed, and electrical equipment, metals, food, and general machinery industries are thriving. In rural areas, in addition to rice farming, livestock farming, and greenhouse horticulture for cucumbers and eggplants are thriving. There is Morinji Temple, famous for its Bunpuku tea kettle, and Tsutsujigaoka (a scenic spot) famous for its azaleas.
