A port city on the east coast of the southeastern peninsula of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Population 41,021 (1980). It faces Kendari Bay. The entrance to the bay is a narrow channel, but inside the bay it is a good harbor with calm waves. During World War II, it was the site of a Japanese military base. It is the center of local commerce, exporting lumber, resin, and other products, and is also home to many overseas Chinese. The town is characterized by its pile houses built over the water.
