Iwafune fence - Iwafune no ki

Japanese:
Iwafune fence - Iwafune no ki

An ancient castle fortress located in Murakame City, Niigata Prefecture. In response to Nutarinoki, which was established the previous year, it was established in 648 (Taika 4) as a development and management base for the Hokuetsu region. It is thought to have been located near the old Iwafunegata in the Iwafune area of Murakame City. With the Miomote River as the border, it is recognized that it also played a role as a defense base against the Emishi and Iteki in the northern mountainous region, and the role of this fortress was important until the north was pacified. There are records of repairs made in 698 (Emperor Mommu 2) and 700 under the name "Iwafune Fortress". There is also Iwafune Shrine, a shrine listed in the Engishiki, which is thought to have been located nearby. In 1957 (Showa 32), remains believed to be the relevant site were excavated.
