Tatenawa (vertical long line)

Japanese: 立縄 - たてなわ（英語表記）vertical long line

A type of fishing gear also known as a standing longline. It is used to target fish that live in deep waters. Dozens of branched hooks are attached to the end of a long fishing line to catch bottom-attached fish. It is like a longline used vertically. It can be done by hand, or in a method called barrel floating, where a vertical fishing line is attached to a barrel. Depending on the size of the boat, 2 to 4 sets of 3 to 6 barrels are used on one boat. At the fishing grounds, the distribution of reefs and schools of fish is confirmed with a fish finder, the fishing gear is adjusted to the depth of the fishing ground, and the gear is cast from upstream.

立はえなわ(延縄)とも呼ばれる釣り漁具の一種。深い海にすむ魚をねらって行われる。長い釣り糸の先の方に数十本の枝針をつけて，根付魚などを釣る。はえなわを縦に使うようなものである。手釣りの場合もあり，また樽流しといって，樽に立縄釣り具をつけて使うこともある。船の大きさで違うが3～6樽ほど連結したものを2～4組，1船で用いる。漁場では魚群探知機で瀬および魚群の分布状況を確認し，漁具を漁場水深に合わせて調節し，潮上から投入する。
