Hojo Tokifusa

A samurai in the mid-Kamakura period. Son of Hojo Tokimasa. Originally called Goro Tokimuraji, he changed his name to Tokifusa in 1202. He served as the governor of Totomi and Suruga, and in 1207 he became the governor of Musashi, and in 1213 he became the governor of Sagami. After the assassination of Minamoto no Sanetomo in 1219, he went to Kyoto as an emissary of the shogunate and requested the retired Emperor Gotoba to send his son to Kamakura as Shogun. During the Jokyu War in 1219, he led a charge to Kyoto as a general alongside his nephew Yasutoki. Yasutoki and Tokifusa remained in Kyoto and became the first Rokuhara Tandai (northern and southern governors). In 1225, Yasutoki, who had become regent, created a new position of Rensho, which was an assistant to the regent, and Tokifusa was appointed to the position. From then on, he held the position of Lieutenant General until his death, and became Yasutoki's good adviser.

鎌倉中期の武士。北条時政の子。当初は五郎時連と称したが,建仁2(1202)年に時房と改名。遠江守,駿河守を歴任し,承元1(1207)年には武蔵守になり,建保1(1213)年に相模守に転じた。承久1(1219)年の源実朝暗殺後には,幕府の使者として京都へ上り,皇子を将軍として鎌倉へ遣わすよう後鳥羽上皇に要請した。同3年の承久の乱に際しては,甥の泰時と共に大将として京都へ攻め上った。泰時と時房はそのまま京都にとどまり,初代の六波羅探題北方と南方になった。嘉禄1(1225)年,執権となっていた泰時は,執権補佐に当たる連署の職を新設し,時房を迎えた。以後,死去するまで連署の地位にあり,泰時の良き相談相手となった。<参考文献>上横手雅敬『北条泰時』
