The ruins of a monastery in England. It was founded in 1131 as a Cistercian monastery on the banks of the River Wye in Gwent (formerly Monmouthshire) in Wales. It was expanded over the next two centuries, reaching its peak in the early 14th century, but its influence gradually declined after the outbreak of the Black Death in 1349. Between 1536 and 1540, as part of King Henry VIII's Reformation, all monasteries in the country were abolished and their property confiscated. This was known as the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
