Emptiness Exhibition

…French painter. Born in Nice to painter parents, but did not receive art education. Throughout his life, he produced monochrome (single-color) paintings, mainly using blue, and is one of the leading figures in Monochromeism. In 1958, he shocked the world by holding the exhibition “Le Vide,” in which nothing was on display, at the Galerie Iris Clair in Paris. In a sense, this exhibition was the ultimate in Monochromeism, but it prompted him to move on to the next stage, attempting to turn traces of natural forces, including human actions, into paintings or works of art, such as “Cosmogonies” (1960), in which natural forces such as air and water (wind and rain) were fixed on the canvas, “Anthropometry” (1960), in which a nude model was painted with blue paint and a human body was printed on the canvas, and “Painting of Fire” (1961), in which a flamethrower was used to burn a board. …

…フランスの画家。画家を両親としてニースに生まれたが，美術教育はうけていない。生涯にわたって，主として青色を用いたモノクローム(単色)の絵画を制作し，モノクロミズムの代表的存在の一人。1958年パリのイリス･クレール画廊で何も展示しない〈空虚Le vide〉展を開き衝撃を与えた。この展覧会はある意味でモノクロミズムの徹底化であったが，これをきっかけにして次の段階へと進み，空気や水(風雨)など自然の諸力を画面に定着する《宇宙進化Cosmogonies》(1960)，裸婦モデルに青い絵具を塗って画面に人体のプリントをする《人体測定Anthropométrie》(1960)，火炎放射器で板に焼けこげをつくる《火の絵画peinture de feu》(1961)など，人間の行為も含めた自然の諸力の痕跡を絵画化ないし作品化する試みを行った。…
