Tatetsuki ruins

This is a large Yayoi period burial mound located on the hilltop of Yabe in Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, within the grounds of the former Tatetsuki Shrine. The main mound is circular, 43 meters in diameter and 4-5 meters high, with protrusions to the northeast and southwest, and is surrounded by rounded gravel and stone rows. On the flat area at the top of the main mound there is a group of huge standing stones, in the center of which is the Kotaishi (commonly known as Kameishi), which was considered a deity. The pattern on this Kotaishi is a unique intricate band of curved lines, and is the source of special vessel pedestals and straight arc patterns. Excavations have been carried out since 1976 (Showa 51), and two burial facilities have been identified. The central body is contained within a burial pit 9 metres long and 4.5 metres wide, within which rounded gravel has accumulated, and excavated items include pottery such as pedestals, jars and high-rise containers, clay figurines, clay beads and an arc-shaped belt stone with curved patterns carved into it similar to those of a sacred object. Inside the burial pit is a wooden coffin 3.5 metres long and 1.5 metres wide, within which is a wooden coffin 2 metres long and 80 centimetres wide at the head side. Large quantities of vermilion, jade magatama, cylindrical beads, small beads and swords were excavated. It is a large burial mound from the first half of the late Yayoi period, and the Myotoiwa ruins on the same Yabe Hill is a subsequent burial mound.
