A musical term. A scale that contains five different notes in one octave. There are many different types depending on the arrangement of the five notes. The diatonic pentatonic scale, which is made up of three diatonic intervals and two minor thirds, is the most common, but there are also chromatic pentatonic scales that include semitone intervals. Pentatonic scales are widely distributed in Japan, China, Korea, Africa, Polynesia, and other countries.
