Pleissenland

...The Wettin family first established a strong base of power by organizing colonial activities in the lower Saale region, and by the beginning of the 12th century had received the title of Margrave of Meissen (Markgraf) from the emperor, effectively assuming the position of acting on behalf of the king over the entire Mark. From this point on, the Wettin family continued to expand their territories to the surrounding areas, and under the long reign of Prince Henry III of Erlauchte (1221-1288), they acquired Pleissenland, which had been developed by the Staufen dynasty, in 1243 (the territory was confirmed in 1255), and in 1247 two imperial principalities, the Landgrafschaft of Thuringia and the Pfalzgrafschaft of Saxony (confirmed in 1264), becoming the largest territorial ruler among the German princes. Furthermore, in 1423, Friedrich I der Streitbare (1381-1428) took the title of Grand Duke of Saxony, which had been in the hands of the House of Ascania for two and a half centuries since the fall of Henry the Lion, and took it into his own hands, along with the titles of Elector and Master of the Imperial Ceremonies.
