...The life expectancy of people living in a country (or region) is determined fundamentally by the quality of the natural, social, and sanitary conditions surrounding it and by the way humans respond to them. Life tables are used as a means of measuring this. In Germany and France, they are called Sterbetafeln and tables de mortalité, and in Japanese they are called mortality tables. Life tables are usually presented as a table with seven statistical indices (mathematically called functions) for each age ( x ): (1) number of survivors l x , (2) number of deaths d x , ( 3) survival rate p x , (4) mortality rate q x , (5) mortality rate μ x , (6) life expectancy x , and (7) stationary population (or steady-state population) L x and T x .
