Franziska Elssler

Austrian ballerina who represents the Romantic ballet era. Commonly known as Fanny, she was born in Vienna. Vibrant and yet with a sensual charm, she rose to fame at the age of 15 at a performance in Naples, and thereafter performed all over the world. Her best known roles were La Fille mal Gardie, but in 1836 she achieved great success at the Paris Opera, dancing the Spanish dance Cachucha in La Lambre Diablo choreographed by Coralli. She was compared to the heavenly Taglioni, who danced in white muslin, and was said to have an earthly beauty. Other notable works include Gypsy, Tarantula, and Esmeralda.

ロマンチック・バレエ時代を代表するオーストリアのバレリーナ。通称ファニィFanny。ウィーン生まれ。生き生きとしてしかも官能的な魅力をもち、15歳のときナポリ公演で一躍有名になり、その後世界各国で活躍した。『ラ・フィユ・マル・ガルディ』などを当り役としたが、1836年パリ・オペラ座で、コラルリ振付けの『びっこの悪魔』のなかのスペイン舞踊カチューチャを踊り、大成功をおさめた。白いモスリンを着て踊る天上的なタリオーニに比較され、地上的な美しさをもつダンサーといわれた。ほかに『ジプシー』『タランチュラ』『エスメラルダ』などの代表作がある。
