A city in western Nara Prefecture, at the eastern foot of the Kongo Mountains. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. In the early modern period it was a castle town for the Kuwayama clan, and later became a Shogunate territory. The city center is at the edge of the Nara Basin in the northeast, and is served by the Wakayama Line and the Kintetsu Gose Line. From the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period, the city was known for its Yamato Gasuri textiles, and the textile industry remains thriving today. The city produces Yamato medicines, hosiery, socks, and footwear, and in rural areas it is a specialty of high-quality rice and Gosho persimmons. The Kongo Mountains are part of the Kongo-Ikoma-Kisen Quasi-National Park. The azaleas on Mount Katsuragi are famous. 60.58 km2 . Population: 30,287 (2010). 奈良県西部,金剛山地東麓の市。1958年市制。近世は桑山氏の城下町,のち天領となる。北東部の奈良盆地末端に中心市街があり,和歌山線,近鉄御所線が通じる。幕末〜明治には大和絣(がすり)の産で知られ,現在も繊維工業が盛ん。大和売薬,メリヤス,靴下,はきものを生産,農村部で良質米のほか御所ガキを特産。金剛山地は金剛生駒紀泉国定公園に属する。葛城山のツツジが有名。60.58km2。3万287人(2010)。
