British journalist and politician. He participated in the founding of the Communist Party of Britain in 1920, and played an active role as a leader, serving as a member of the party's Politburo from 1922 to 1965, and as its vice-chairman from 1943 to 1965. In 1921, he launched the Labour Monthly. As his father was Indian, he had a great influence on Indian students studying in Britain, and also had a huge influence on the Communist Party of India. He is the author of many books, including India Today (1940) and Modern India: India Today and Tomorrow (56).

[Died] 1909. Calcutta, Indian historian. Born into a family of scholars, he studied at Calcutta University before continuing his studies in England, where he passed the Indian Civil Service Examination in 1869. After returning to India, he became an official in the Indian Government Service, and served mainly as a local administrative and tax collector for 26 years. After retiring, he wrote many books on history and economics, including a two-volume work (1901-02) on the economic history of the British colonial period, which was a pioneering work in the study of Indian economic history, and he also studied the history of ancient Indian civilizations.

インドの歴史学者。学者の家に生れ，カルカッタ大学に学んだあと，イギリスで勉学を続け，1869年にインド高等文官試験に合格した。帰国後インド政庁の官吏となり，26年間主として地方の行政・徴税官を歴任した。退職後は歴史と経済に関する多くの著書を著わし，特にイギリス植民地時代経済史に関する2巻本 (1901～02) は，インド人の経済史研究の先駆的業績であり，ほかにインド古代文明史の研究も行なった。
