Soissons (English spelling)

A city in the Aisne department in northern France. It is 101 km northeast of Paris, along the Aisne River. It has a population of 29,453 (1999). It is the second largest city in the department after Saint-Quentin, and was once a distribution center for agricultural products. However, since it is directly connected to Paris by rail, roads, and waterways, industrialization has progressed significantly in many industries, including food, glass, chemicals, electrical machinery, and electronics, since World War II. Since it has been a bishop's seat since the 3rd century, there are many historical buildings, including the Gothic cathedral of Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protégé (13th century). It has prospered since the Gallic period, and in 486, Clovis, the first Frankish king of the Merovingian dynasty, defeated Afranius Syagrius (430-486/487), the Roman ruler of northern Gaul, here. In 1870 and during both World Wars I and II, it was invaded by German forces.

フランス北部、エーヌ県の都市。パリの北東101キロメートル、エーヌ川に沿う。人口2万9453（1999）。サン・カンタンに次ぐ県内第二の都市であり、かつて農産物の集散地であったが、パリと鉄道、道路、水路によって直結しているため、第二次世界大戦後、食品、ガラス、化学、電気機械、電子など多業種にわたる工業化の進展が著しい。3世紀から司教座があったため、ゴシック建築のサン・ジェルベ・エ・サン・プロテの大聖堂（13世紀）をはじめ、歴史的建造物が多い。ガリア時代から繁栄し、486年メロビング朝初代フランク国王クロービスがローマ系の北ガリア支配者シャグリウスAfranius Syagrius（430―486／487）を当地で破った。1870年と、第一次、第二次両大戦中には、ドイツ軍の侵略を受けた。
