A city in the Aisne department in northern France. It is 101 km northeast of Paris, along the Aisne River. It has a population of 29,453 (1999). It is the second largest city in the department after Saint-Quentin, and was once a distribution center for agricultural products. However, since it is directly connected to Paris by rail, roads, and waterways, industrialization has progressed significantly in many industries, including food, glass, chemicals, electrical machinery, and electronics, since World War II. Since it has been a bishop's seat since the 3rd century, there are many historical buildings, including the Gothic cathedral of Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protégé (13th century). It has prospered since the Gallic period, and in 486, Clovis, the first Frankish king of the Merovingian dynasty, defeated Afranius Syagrius (430-486/487), the Roman ruler of northern Gaul, here. In 1870 and during both World Wars I and II, it was invaded by German forces. [Nobuo Takahashi] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
