Born on November 13, 1626. He was adopted by his cousin Okubo Tadamoto, and in 1667 he became the second head of the Okubo clan, which ruled Hizen Karatsu Domain (Saga Prefecture). He served Tokugawa Iemitsu closely, and in 1679 he became a senior councilor. The following year he was transferred to Sakura, Shimousa (Chiba Prefecture). In 1682 he became the first head of the second Okubo clan, which ruled Odawara Domain in Sagami (Kanagawa Prefecture). He was awarded a fief of 103,000 koku.
