Illyricum

Japanese: イリュリクム(英語表記)Illyricum
Illyricum
An ancient Roman province in Illyria, located in the northwestern part of the Balkan Peninsula. It was bounded by the Drilon (now Drin) River in the south, Istria in the north, and the Sauvus (now Sava) River in the east. Its administrative center was Salonae (now Split) in Dalmatia. Originally, the Illyrians had settled here from around the 10th century BC, and had established the Hallstatt culture. With the support of Macedonia, they fought against Rome, but in 168 BC they succumbed to their power. As the Roman Empire developed along the Danube, the province was divided into two provinces, Dalmatia and Pannonia. When the empire was divided in 395, the area east of the Drilon River became part of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire. In the 3rd and 5th centuries, it was invaded by the Visigoths and Huns, and in the 6th century, Slavic tribes invaded the area, and by the end of the 7th century, all of the area was Slavic, except for present-day Albania.
