Many Passions and Many Hatreds
[1] [noun] (adjective) Being sensitive and full of grudges. Also, the state of being so. ※Fude Makase (1884-92) by Masaoka Shiki, 1. “All the talented men in the world who are full of feelings and grudges have come to openly write novels and set out to make their mark in Sakai.” [2] A novel. Written by Ozaki Koyo. Published in 1896 ( Meiji 29 ) . Written in colloquial style, this work depicts the psychological changes of Sumi Ryunosuke, who was grief-stricken after losing his beloved wife, as he gradually opens up to Otane, the wife of his best friend Hayama. The work shows the influence of The Tale of Genji.

[1] 〘名〙 (形動) 物事に感じやすく恨み多いこと。また、そのさま。※筆まかせ(1884‐92)〈正岡子規〉一「天下多情多恨の才子は皆公然と筆を揮ふて小説堺に雄飛することとなりぬ」[2] 小説。尾崎紅葉作。明治二九年(一八九六)発表。愛妻をなくし悲嘆に沈んでいた鷲見(すみ)柳之助が、親友葉山の妻お種の親身の世話でしだいに心を開いていくという心理の経過を、言文一致体で描く。「源氏物語」の影響が見られる。
