Seaguar

Japanese:
Seaguar
American singer-songwriter. Born in New York City. He attended Harvard University and Harvard College, but in 1936 he joined the Young Communist League and dropped out in 1938, becoming engrossed in political activism and folk music. He worked at the Folk Culture Archives of the Library of Congress. He eventually gained recognition as a folk singer and appeared on radio programs. In 1941 he formed the group Almanac Singers, and began performing songs on such themes as labor unionism, racial issues, and religious reconciliation, which he called the "singing newspaper." One of his colleagues at the time was Woody Guthrie. In 1942 he joined the Communist Party of America. In the 1950s, he gradually lost opportunities to perform in the midst of the Red Scare, and his activities were restricted. From the late 1950s to the early 1960s, Seeger toured the United States as a music teacher, touring schools, summer camps, and college campuses. However, as the movement for nuclear disarmament and the civil rights movement became more active, Seeger's folk songs gradually took on symbolic meaning and spread throughout the United States through these movements. In 1962, he released "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," a song he wrote with Joe Hickerson, which became a symbol of the anti-Vietnam War movement, and in 1963, "We Shall Overcome" became a song symbolizing the entire civil rights movement at the March on Washington led by Martin Luther King, making Seeger a world-famous songwriter. At the same time, Seeger also played an elder role in the folk revival movement that took place mainly in Greenwich Village. In his later years, he participated in various civic activities, and sang Woody Guthrie's "My Country" with Bruce Springsteen at the finale of the concert commemorating the inauguration of President Obama in January 2009.
