A popular revolt broke out in Naples in 1647 under the rule of the Spanish Viceroy. Genoino, a lawyer and representative of the bourgeoisie who increasingly criticized the privileges of the nobility, contacted Masaniello (whose real name was Tommaso Aniello, 1620-47), a popular fish merchant in the residential area, in an attempt to form an alliance with the people. The people were growing increasingly dissatisfied with the heavy tax policies of the Viceroy's government, and there was particularly strong opposition to the fruit tax. On July 7, 1647, the people stormed the tax office, turning into a rebellion, and the next day it had escalated into a popular uprising estimated to number between 50,000 and 100,000 people.
