Seminario

Japanese: セミナリヨ
Seminario
Means seminary in Portuguese. An educational institution established by the Jesuit priest Valignano with the aim of training Japanese clergy and educating the children of the upper classes. Established in 1580 in Azuchi, Omi and Arima, Hizen. Teaching Latin, Japanese, Christian doctrine, as well as music and crafts, the course lasted 3-4 years. Both the Azuchi and Arima seminaries were lost in the ravages of war and persecution of Christians, but in the midst of this the two merged and continued to exist until 1614. They disappeared in the same year when the Edo Shogunate banned Christianity. Other seminaries were established in Omura, Yamaguchi, and a new seminary was established in Nagasaki in 1601 by Bishop Cerqueira to train parish priests. →Collegio→Related topic: Christian schools
