The gardens are attached to Palazzo Pitti, the Medici residence in Florence, central Italy. Construction began in 1550, when the sculptor Niccolo Tribolo was commissioned by Eleonora da Toledo, wife of Cosimo I. Tribolo died shortly after, and Bartolomeo Ammannati and others took over the work. The original garden was a typical Italian Renaissance style with terraces leading to the hill behind the palace (see Italian gardens). Later, in the 17th century, a new axis was added to the eastern slope, and the vast gardens we see today were completed. Architecture, sculpture, and nature are in perfect harmony, and in 2013 the "Medici Villas and Gardens in Tuscany" were registered as a World Heritage Site.
