A historical novel written by Italian author A. Manzoni in 1827. It is also known as The Betrothed. The story is set in a village near Lake Como in northern Italy, under Spanish rule, in the late 1620s. A young man, Renzo, is engaged to marry a young woman named Lucia. However, the tyrannical lord Don Rodrigo takes an interest in Lucia and threatens the cowardly priest Don Abbondio to prevent the wedding from taking place. Lucia's mother tries to resolve the matter by appealing to a lawyer, but the lawyer also turns cold upon hearing the name of Rodrigo.

イタリアの作家A.マンゾーニが1827年に著した歴史小説。《婚約者》の訳名でも知られる。1620年代の末，スペインの支配下にあった北イタリアのコモ湖の近くの村が舞台で，いいなずけの青年レンツォと娘ルチアとが結婚しようとした。ところが横暴な領主ドン･ロドリゴがルチアに目をかけ，臆病な司祭ドン･アボンディオを脅迫し，式を挙げさせない。ルチアの母は弁護士に訴えて解決しようとするが，弁護士もロドリゴの名を聞いて冷たくなる。
