An island in Equatorial Guinea located in the Gulf of Guinea in west-central Africa. Formerly known as Ferdinand Po Island. A volcanic island with a rugged coast. Coffee and cacao are its main products. The Portuguese arrived around 1470, it became a Spanish colony in 1778, and in 1968 it gained independence as a state of Equatorial Guinea. The inhabitants are the indigenous Buhi people, with some mixed races including whites. Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, is located here. Area: 2017 km2 . Population: 87,700 (1994).
