…In 1896, 13 Chinese students arrived in Japan for the first time in the long history of Sino-Japanese exchange, and were entrusted to Jigoro Kano, who was the principal of the Higher Normal School at the time. In 1898, Zhang Zhidong wrote “Encouraging Study” to encourage Chinese people to study in Japan. In contrast to the decline of study in the United States, which had begun in 1872 (the 11th year of the Tongzhi era), studying in Japan became an unprecedented boom, due in part to the low cost and the benefit of being of the same culture and race. …
