Located in the north-central part of Iceland, on a sandbar and terraces at the back of Eyja Fjord, this is the central city of the country. The name of the city means "cultivated sandbar." It is a distribution center for the region's agricultural products, with a fishing port, a fish processing plant, a fish oil refinery, a wool factory, an agricultural market, as well as an ultra-modern church, an industrial school, an agricultural experiment station, and a botanical garden. It is 240 km northeast of the capital Reykjavik, and is served by regular air and bus routes. Population 14,436 (1991 estimate).
