Tagore

Japanese: タゴール
Tagore
Poet and novelist from Bengal, India. His name is Robindronath Thakur in Bengali. He was recognized for his talent in poetry at a young age, and traveled to England at the age of 17 to be exposed to Western culture. After 1890, he became deeply involved in Bengali rural culture, and in 1901, he founded a boarding school (now Visva-Bharati National University) in Shantiniketan, and promoted the rural reform movement. In 1910, he published Gitanjali, a collection of Bengali poems born out of a life of religious meditation, and in 1913, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature for its English translation. Although he left the nationalist movement at the time of the Bengal Partition Act in 1905, he became a spiritual pillar of the independence movement led by Gandhi and others. He faced the contradictions in Indian society and, although he despaired of Western civilization, he continued to paint hope for the future. He also created many songs and a new style of dance drama that are still familiar to this day as Robindra-Shongeet (Robindra's music).
