A general term for Chaetopterus variopedatus, a member of the order Sedentary, class Polychaeta, phylum Annelida, family Chaetopteridae, or one of the species. The Chaetopterus variopedatus species is about 20 cm long and consists of three body parts: anterior, middle, and posterior. The anterior body has nine segments and a pair of long, thin paratenta on the head. The first segment of the 5-segmented middle body has a large pair of wing-like dorsal foot branches, which is why it is named after this. It lives in a membranous tube with sand and shell fragments attached to it, diving 10 to 50 cm deep in a U-shape and protruding both ends of the tube above the sand. It has long been known that Chaetopterus variopedatus emit light in response to mechanical or chemical stimuli, and emits light when luminous substances are secreted from glands in the paratenta, the paratenta, the paratenta of the middle body, and the base of the warty foot of the posterior body. It is found in the Chubu region of Honshu and south, and lives in sand and mud from tidal flats to a depth of about 10 meters. There are five species of Chaetopteridae known to exist in Japan. The sandworm Mesochaetopterus minutus creates tubes about 2 mm in diameter that are covered with sand, and many of these gather together to form large masses. The foot-striped worm Telepsavus costarum creates a horny-like burrowing tube with many rings.
